Budget barometer
Calculate the cost of trip essentials abroad

Welcome to the Travelex Holiday Budget Barometer
At Travelex, we understand that it’s quite easy to find out the cost of airfares, but to find out the actual cost of ‘living’ in a tourist city is another matter.

So to help you avoid running out of money in a foreign country (which can be quite scary), or having to unexpectedly use your credit card abroad, we’ve pulled together some indicative costs for common expenses in Australian Dollars. Once you have your budget worked out, why not load it onto a Travelex Cash Passport so you avoid the temptation to overspend while overseas?

  • The UK is the dearest place to enjoy a burger, setting you back the equivalent of AUD$5.30 If you’re on a budget and love a burger, China is the most economical destination at just AUD$1.80
  • If a beer is your beverage of choice, France could see you become a tea-totaller with a pint costing a frightening AUD$12.00. But head to Indonesia and that beer will cost you only AUD$1.54
  • In the city that never sleeps, New York, a bed (3*) will cost you a whopping AUD$325, yet in Malaysia the equivalent is a mere AUD$50
  • You wouldn’t want to be too hungry in Hong Kong, with a cooked breakfast costing an extravagant AUD$21.65. Yet pop over to Indonesia and you’ll be forking out just AUD$4.25

When we combine the cost of a burger, beer, bed and breakfast in each destination, it would seem that the US (New York) is the most expensive destination and Malaysia the most economical.
