About Cash Passport

Q: How does Cash Passport card work?
A: Cash Passport is a PIN protected Visa card that can be used to get cash at over 1 million Visa ATMs. Because it's a prepaid card, your spending is limited to the amount of money available on your card. Customer preload their Australian dollars onto cards which are available in 4 currencies (Australian dollars, United States dollars, Great British pounds, Euro).

Q: Will I find cash machines where I am going?
A: There are over 1 million Visa ATMs worldwide that you can withdraw local currency from. To check on their location visit Visa’s ATM locator

Q: Which card should I take?
A: Take the EUR card to European countries, the GBP card to Great Britain and the USD card to the US. To other countries we recommend the AUD card.

Q: What are the benefits of the foreign currency cards (ie GBP, USD and EUR cards)?
A: You can lock in your value at the time of purchase so you won’t be subjected to exchange rate fluctuations whilst overseas. Locking in your value means:

  • No foreign exchange margin applies when using the card to withdraw cash (when the local currency is the same as the card currency, eg using the USD card in the United States)
  • Certainly and control around what fees are being incurred
  • Not having to work out exchange rates to know the card balance

*when the local currency is the same as the card’s currency. When it’s a different currency a currency conversion fee will apply and hence we advise you take an AU$ card to use in those instances. Click here for more information on fees and limits

Q: What are the benefits of Cash Passport compared to traveller’s cheques?
A: Cash Passport card is similar to a traveller’s cheque because you can lock in your value in a foreign currency (American dollars, Euros or Great British pounds) when you purchase the card. And unlike traveller’s cheques, Cash Passport can be used at ATMs worldwide and is secured by a PIN. There is no personalisation on the card so if you lose it your identity is protected.

Q: What are the benefits Cash Passport compared to Bank debit cards?
A: Bank Debit cards are linked to a bank account – eg a keycard account. Cash Passport is not linked to any bank account which is good because:

  • If a Bank Debit card is lost/ compromised, customers bank account details are linked to the card
  • If your Bank Debit card is lost, fraudsters could steal all your funds in the account (compared to a pre-set holiday money fund on Cash Passport)
  • Cash Passport is instantly issued, no need to wait a week
  • Bank Debit cards don’t come with free Global Emergency Assistance that can arrange emergency funds or provide advice regarding lost passports and more.

Cash Passport ATM fees are cheaper, for example Bank’s debit cards charge $5 for ATM withdrawals and $2 for balance enquiries (compared to $3.75 and $0 fees respectively for Cash Passport). Some other key differences include:

  • Banks charge for replacement cards ($15) – free with Cash Passport
  • Bank Debit cards don’t come with free emergency assistance:
    • Free access to emergency funds. Eg John’s checking out of his hotel and catching an overseas flight in 4 hours. He realises he’s lost both his cards. He can call Travelex’s 24-hour Emergency Assistance call centre to cancel his cards and arrange for emergency cash to be sent to the nearest available location free of charge. Now he can pay for his hotel.
    • Free medical and legal assistance – location, contact numbers and opening hours of hospitals/ doctors/ dentists/ pharmacies and lawyers.
    • Free assistance with replacing lost passports – advise on nearest embassy/ opening hours and advise on process for replacement. Travelex can contact friends/ relatives on your behalf to help provide any documentation required.
    • Free assistance with sending emergency messages back home – Travelex can arrange for a message to be sent to a friend/ relative/ organisation by either phone/ fax/ email.

Q: Are there any age restrictions?
A: No.
